Known commonly as the "tummy tuck," abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen. The procedure also helps to flatten the abdomen by tightening the surrounding muscles. If you are in relatively good shape but are concerned by fatty deposits or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise, this procedure can dramatically reduce or even eliminate a protruding abdomen. Abdominoplasty can be particularly helpful to women with stretched abdominal areas due to previous pregnancies. Older individuals whose skin has lost some of its elasticity and are slightly obese can also benefit from a tummy tuck.

During the procedure, the skin and fatty deposits on the abdomen are removed. The weak, bulging abdominal muscles are tightened to flatten and strengthen the abdomen. The excess skin is redistributed to cover the entire abdomen, resulting in a tighter, flattened abdomen. The surgery can produce a permanent scar, although the scar will likely be located below the bikini or bathing suit line and will fade over time.
